Signs of Bearing Wear
Unusual humming, vibration, or increased surface temperature (above 70°C) are early warnings of servo motor bearing degradation. As bearings wear, the rotor alignment shifts, causing encoder misreadings and torque ripple. For high-speed Panasonic servos running at 3000 RPM, bearing life typically reaches 20,000–30,000 hours under normal loads—but harsh environments with dust or moisture can halve that figure.
Preventive Lubrication
Some servo motors have sealed bearings that don't require relubrication (e.g., Mitsubishi HG series). Others, especially larger Yaskawa models, come with grease nipples for periodic re-greasing. Use the manufacturer-recommended grease (e.g., Shell Albida for Siemens servos) and apply 1–2 pumps every 2000 operating hours. Over-greasing causes seal rupture, so always follow the torque spec when tightening the nipple cap.
Vibration Monitoring
Install an accelerometer on the motor housing and connect it to a PLC analog input to track vibration trends. If the vibration velocity exceeds 2.5 mm/s (ISO 10816 standard), schedule a bearing replacement. For critical spindles, use a condition monitoring module like Siemens SIRIUS to alert maintenance before catastrophic failure. Regular bearing care ensures your servo maintains its rated accuracy over years of service.
