Protocol Showdown
Industrial Ethernet protocols are not one-size-fits-all. PROFINET, championed by Siemens, offers real-time (RT) and isochronous real-time (IRT) classes, making it ideal for motion control with sub-millisecond cycle times. On the other hand, Ethernet/IP, widely used with Allen-Bradley and some Omron PLCs, leverages standard CIP (Common Industrial Protocol) for seamless integration with enterprise IT systems. Your choice heavily depends on your existing brand ecosystem.
Performance and Topology
PROFINET supports daisy-chain and ring topologies, reducing cabling costs, while Ethernet/IP typically requires a star topology with managed switches. For high-axis count servo systems (e.g., Yaskawa drives), PROFINET IRT ensures synchronized jitter below 1µs. Ethernet/IP, however, excels in mixed-vendor environments where you have Schneider PLCs controlling Panasonic servos, thanks to its object-oriented data modeling.
Future-Proof Decision
Both protocols now support Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) for converged IT/OT traffic. If your shop floor is heavily Siemens-based, PROFINET is a no-brainer. If you value flexibility and multi-vendor interoperability, Ethernet/IP with a gateway might serve you better. Evaluate your long-term machine roadmap, not just today’s price tag.
