CC-Link vs. EtherCAT – Choosing the Right Fieldbus for Your PLC
Protocol Origins and Strengths
CC-Link is Mitsubishi's proprietary fieldbus, widely adopted in Asian manufacturing for its simplicity and robust error detection. It supports cyclic communication with up to 64 stations and is ideal for large-scale systems like material handling. EtherCAT, championed by Beckhoff but now used with Siemens and Omron, offers blazing speed (up to 1000 axes in 100µs) with daisy-chain topology, reducing cabling and switch costs.
Integration Complexity
Using CC-Link with a Mitsubishi iQ-R PLC is plug-and-play; you just set station numbers via dip switches. For EtherCAT with a Siemens PLC, you need a PROFINET-to-EtherCAT gateway (like the Anybus Communicator) unless using a Siemens drive with built-in EtherCAT support (rare). Omron's NX series natively supports EtherCAT, making it the preferred choice for high-speed motion control networks.
Application Scenarios
Choose CC-Link for plants already heavily invested in Mitsubishi ecosystems—it offers simple diagnostics and wide I/O module availability. Choose EtherCAT if you need sub-microsecond synchronization for CNC or robotic welding, or if your machine integrates multiple brands (e.g., Yaskawa drives with Schneider PLCs) that all support EtherCAT natively. Both are future-proof, but EtherCAT's open standard attracts broader third-party support.
